Peter Metcalfe, currently with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, spent much of his early years at Crowdy Bay and revisits the area from time to time.

Currently at the University of New England, Peter has chronicled his many visits through time and to the area.  He's kindly agreed to include a selection below on our wonderful natural treasure that is the Crowdy Bay National Park!

Koala noises in the night so close to the tent were a rare privilege even if the altercation sounded as if the victim was extremely stressed. Some of the cries were almost human and sent a shiver down my spine. A unique Australian way of being awakened!
Diamond Head Headland -- CLICK for FULL-SIZED! Later on, I heard noises that could be interpreted as a koala moving through the ferns and climbing the tree near the tent. I was disappointed not to find a koala in the tree when I looked for one in the morning. I was searching among the thicker branches where a sensible koala would sit!.
Then a bird flying past the tree caught my eye and led my gaze to a big koala perched much higher up among the thin twigs in the crown of the tree.
Of course looking along the coast of my forebears and of memorable childhood holidays was very special to me, even after so many years.
The Dunbogan Beach below Kattang was not on the mental map of my youth, but Diamond Head and Crowdy Head beyond certainly were imprinted on my mind.

Without seeing Crowdy Bay stretching between the headlands I knew the land of my exploratory youth was still there, even though greatly changed by sand mining. Exciting places where I discovered myself as much as I discovered the environment.

Seeing those brilliant white Caladenias was a buzz. They stood out like neon signs above the drab, dry leaf litter along the tracks around Kylie's. Seeing them in such a dry season was an unexpected pleasure as were the patches of Nodding Greenhoods and a solitary neat little Pt. pedunculata.

Before we got to the orchids, the track up the headland led past a tempting sward of kangaroo grass.

While I was finishing my breakfast cup of tea five yellow-tailed black cockatoos flew south and then 20 flew north, just to the west of where I was sipping my cup of tea.

About then, all the alarm calls alerted me to the Australian Hobby that zipped over at an amazing speed. That flying-machine did not even seem to be working hard for such speed. Later on I revisited the Sun Orchids down the road.
From there I saw the two Swamp Harriers and enjoyed seeing the Brush Cuckoo close up. I was also delighted to hear those cryptic Emuwrens in the heath.
My experiment of constructing a greenhouse over an unopened flower certainly elevated the temperature but the new flower did not open.
